I have mixed feelings on Dr Lam as well as Bascom Palmer. Dr Lam was not able to find a problem after a extensive exam. I live 3 1/2 hours away and his office scheduled me to come in to see the Doctor and have Genetic testing done to look for other issues. When I saw him, Dr Lam changed his mind and said I didn't need genetic testing and I should be seen by Dr Yoo for possible cataract lens exchange. They contacted me with an appointment with Dr Yoo that was 4 months out. I am out on disability for low vision. They can't approve continued leave to wait four months. I would think Dr Lam could have expedited this appointment by calling or speaking to Dr Yoo. I am now an established patient.

The bascam palmer eye institute is definitely the best place to go for your eye needs and in a pinch has the eye ER if you need it. They have access to all of the new treatments and are constantly doing new research on conditions and treatments. You can expect the fellows/residents who work with Dr. Lam to review your chart beforehand and order certain lengthy vision testing before you see the doctor. The traffic light leading to the parking deck took 17 minutes and we actually watched 4 near miss wrecks and someone actually driving on the wrong side of the road up on the sidewalk and back through the turn lane back to their lane. You will need to factor in an extra 30-40 minutes at least to get to the deck and then to find parking and walk back down, even if you have a handicap pass. I typically have at least 2-3 hours of testing before seeing Dr. Lam. You will need to clear your schedule for the day for these appointments as they are very thorough with the testing beforehand which I appreciate. My appointment was at 11:30 and I left at 2:20 pm. If you go to a different ED and have imaging done don’t forget to bring the discs for the imaging. Dr. Lam is straight forward and will not sugar coat things but is pleasant. I am impressed at how he navigates the EHR system so easily pulling up a thousand different pictures and tests on his two computers quickly (which to be fair he navigates EPIC quicker than I do). He goes through all of your imaging and takes a history with you and gets a game plan going. My first appointment as a new patient was definitely more lengthy with the fellow taking the history and asking a thousand questions. It helps to bring out a med list and list of symptoms and time table of symptoms. Dr. Lam’s bedside manner is sufficient and he has been polite but blunt but at the end of the day I do not go to him for just his disposition but because he is the best in the field (the disposition is a plus).

(I had previously been to Dr. Eggenberger at the mayo clinic is Jacksonville who is a neuro-ophthalmologist who lived up to his poor reviews with minimal testing and no history of present illness and who said they ran out of room on their EHR system and could not download my imaging done previously (eggenberger suggested my first step should have been seeing a neuro surgeon instead of himself (Dr. Eggenberger) and turned red when I said I was referred by Neurosurgery and had seen 3 neurosurgeons already.) The point is, Dr. Lam is worth the drive, and is much better than Mayo Clinic and I can confidently say he is the best neuro-ophthalmologist in Florida. He gets my highest compliment that I would recommend him to friends and family. 10/10 would recommend, just bring snacks and a phone charger.

My husband had to wait 6+ hours to see the opthalmologist. He waited there for more than 6 hours and had 15 min of dr-patient interaction, if anything. The physician (dr lan) and the office staff where condecending and unapologetic. Unbelievable that they think this is acceptable patient care. Dr Lam then casually mentioned he didnt feel “comfortable” signing the lenses prescription, even though that was stated as the reason for the visit, and of course nobody mentioned rhat in the 6+ hours that he waited.
Bascom palmer has the audacity to reply to this review with a generic message, without so much of an apology or acknowlegde of error.

Dr Lam is very knowledgeable but his bedside manner needs some work. We live 4 hours from Miami and it is a burden to travel that distance. We had to get his associate to schedule additional IV treatments closer to home. He just walked out of the room like it wasn't his problem.

Dr. Lam is an incredibly smart, he's diagnosed a family member with an eye condition that everyone neglected. I went to see him and he was able to give me peace of mind regarding a condition in my eye. One of the great things about Miami is the quality of doctors, such as Dr. Lam and Bacon Palmer Eye Institute.

Dr. Byron Lam is very dismissive and inattentive to African American patients. His conduct is unbecoming of an Ophthalmologist, the WORST I have encountered in years. Unfortunately, I will not and cannot forfeit this opportunity to commit on his behavior. As a Clinician, I am mortified of the lack of sensitivity and respect I have witnessed. I STRONGLY encourage Bascom Palmer Eye Institute to review his patient feedback responses and analyze the data by race and gender to identify common themes and trends.
